This superbly researched monograph deals with a historical process rarely addressed in military histories, namely the post-World War II fate of the well over 200,000- strong Polish Armed Forces who fought in the West. These Armed Forces, Army, Air, and Naval were loyal to the Polish Government in London. Nurek's account is based exclusively on British National Archives (TNA) and unveils the British process of implementing the Yalta Conference in regard to the Polish Government in London and in particular of the Polish Armed Forces. The title is evocative since it echoes the feelings of the Poles who had fought for over five years to regain freedom, only to see it lost with the active compliance of their allies. The results of the Yalta Conference confirmed the worst fears of the Polish political and military circles. It was a particularly bitter blow to the Polish 2nd Corps in Italy, whose soldiers in overwhelming numbers were natives of the territories lost to Poland.
