Nazi Policy on the Eastern Front, 1941

Operation Barbarossa was one of the most herculean military undertakings of the 20th century. Its failure to 'knock out' the Soviet Union was subscribed to poor planning, Adolf Hitler's incessant interference, and outright bad luck. In recent years, however, it has become clear that the invasion had little chance of the success that the Nazi leadership believed in. This failure, of which there were warning signs early in the campaign, led to the 'radical-ization' of the entire war effort on the eastern front as well as in the other parts of the Nazi empire.
