I should admit that it was with some trepidation that I took up the task of reviewing Frank Ellis's latest work, fearing that this would be yet one more book about Operation Barbarossa—Hitler's monumental and ultimately disastrous invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Thus I was pleasantly surprised to discover that despite the title, the book has very little to do with the planning and conduct of Barbarossa and everything to do with the nature of the contending regimes.
