Obituary: Hendrik Salomon Konijn, 1918-2008

Hendrik S. Konijn, who died in Oakland, California, on October 14th, 2008, was a retired professor of statistics, whose research and teaching career took him from the USA to Australia and Israel, where he was among the founders of the Department of Statistics at Tel Aviv University in 1966. He made important contributions in research and applications in sampling theory, in agricultural economics, in econometrics and in mathematical statistics. He published extensively in leading journals, such as the Annals of Mathematical Statistics, the Journal of the American Statistical Association and Econometrica. In 1972 he published the first Hebrew textbook in sampling, based on his courses in sampling at Tel Aviv University, where he taught from 1966 until his retirement in 1985. The English version of the textbook was published by North-Holland-Elsevier in 1973.
