"Don't judge a book by its cover" ... As I consider the volume before me I try not to focus on its title and subtitle, because they induce in me the response that what we might expect to be the standard work for years to come is tainted with the nationalist paradigm that infuses much of the historiography of the land that is now modern Turkey. I turn to the Introduction to find justification for the use of the designation 'Turkey' in the context of the distant past-the centuries between the battle of Malazgirt and the fall of Constantinople-but we must wait until the final contribution, that of Ahmet Ya§ar Ocak, before we learn that because Anatolia had passed under Turkish domination by the third crusade of 1189, western sources thereafter refer to it as 'Turchia' (pp. 354, 363).
