Does the process of urbanization reveal identifiable regularities through time and space? Are there long-run trends in the development process? In the complex evolution of human societies, are there factors other than politics, economic crises, wars, religions, races, cultures, languages, and sociological values that have influenced urbanization, development, and particular cities? These questions lie at the root of Luc-Normand Tellier's attempt to determine whether geographical space is merely the setting, or is a major influencing factor in the world's urban evolution.
