Robert Western is something of a doyen of Oakwood historians, having in initially focused on lines in the north-west more than thirty years ago ... which was twenty years after he taught your reviewer geography at primary school in Lincoln. It would not be controversial to suggest that the subject of this latest book lacks the romance of his earlier Cumbrian titles, but the sub-title accurately reflects the importance that this railway once had for the people of its main town and the book includes much of interest.
