A History of the Southern Railway

The phrase '...and its constituents' should really be appended to the title of this book, as only a quarter of the text is devoted to the 1923-48 period. This is a competent summary history of the principal companies involved (complete with a chronology of line openings in an appendix) with due (but not excessive) attention to locomotives, rolling stock, steamers and accidents but little on policy. Given that Dendy Marshall's classic covering the same ground is long out of print, this can be recommended to anyone who wants a convenient reference.
