The cover of this issue of the Journal shows the Toodle family at home, as depicted by the incomparable Phiz in Charles Dickens' Dombey and Son. Mr Toodle (we are never given his Christian name) was a fireman on the London & Birmingham Railway. The rather surly looking youth leaning against the mantelpiece is his eldest son, Rob, who generally answers to the name of'Biler' (boiler). The family enters the story because Mr Toodle's wife, Polly, was employed as wet nurse to the infant Paul Dombey, the eponymous 'Son'. They form one more example of Dickens' use of railways in this work as an image and as a plot device. The best known instance of this, of course, is his description of the upheaval caused in north London by the building of the London & Birmingham Railway some ten years previous to his writing of Dombey.
