Jonathan Kern's book draws from not only his own career experience as the Executive Producer for Training at NPR but also 100 current or former NPR employees, all of whom have stories to tell and wisdom to impart. The result is a book that combines the best of tried and tested theoretical approaches with the practical realities of being an audio journalist and producer in today's changing media environment. In short, what Kern hopes to convey in the book is the distillation of "NPR's more than three decades of experimentation of trying to do it differently, and trying to get it right" (p. xii).
