Radio's Hidden Voice: The Origins of Public Broadcasting in the United States

It is fitting and appropriate that Radio's Hidden Voice: The Origins of Public Broadcasting in the United States, by Hugh Richard Slotten won the AEJMC 2010 History Division Book Award. Slotten's first media history book, Radio and Television Regulation: Broadcast Technology in the United States, 1920-1960, (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2000) set a high standard for electronic media regulatory research. In each book, Slotten's attention to detail and citation provide compelling support for his research while conveying a most absorbing story. It is not surprising that his editors for Radio's Hidden Voice include Robert W. McChesney and John C. Nerone. McChesney established a "gold standard" of citation for media historians in 1994 with the publication of his classic work, Telecommunications, Mass Media and Democracy. Slotten's excellent exploration of the engineering mindset found in the early attempts by government to regulate radio and TV echoes the depth of the earlier McChesney work.
