Rethinking the Basics: Value-Stream Maps Versus Process Maps

Many of us are quite familiar with traditional process mapping. Although there are a number of formats that are used, they all provide similar information. Traditional process maps usually document the work done by a functional group. They are very useful for training new personnel to perform the required work tasks properly, for auditing, and as a basis for continuous improvement efforts. They also can be useful when automating a process.
