Various completion-/workover-riser systems are available and include integral, nonintegral, jacketed, nonjacketed, dual-bore, and concentric designs. Riser-coupling designs include flanged, threaded, and dog-type connectors. These designs have annulus access incorporated into the riser itself, making riser couplings larger, more complicated, and subject to failure. These applications are inadequate for ultra-deepwater subsea completions. They are expensive, time consuming, and have motion-compensator loads greater than ratings on many rigs. The drillpipe-riser (DPR) concept attempts to overcome these problems. Conventional drillpipe is used to run both tubing hangers and subsea trees.
