Because of their retarded nature, emulsified acids are used to stimulate carbonate formations. Traditionally, they are used as acid fracturing fluids, but recently they also have been used in matrix acidizing treatments. Carbonate formations generally have a low permeability and can be highly fissured. Long fractures in acid fracturing treatments or deep wormholes in matrix treatments are necessary to maximize production.
