Traditionally, environmental-impact assessment (EIA) has been based on review and assessment of identified impacts and issues. Strategies to mitigate, control, and monitor these impacts also are addressed. BHP Petroleum uses a risk-based hazard-identification approach at the start of projects to ensure that actual and potential environmental impacts and concerns are identified at the conceptual stage. With a hazard-identification approach, impacts are identified in a systematic manner through a brainstorm-ing session involving a multidisciplinary team. At this session, sources of impacts are identified and methods for their prevention, control, and mitigation are discussed.
