Cascaded Mach Zehnder coupler for dynamic EDFA gain equalization applications

In this paper, we have presented design of Cascaded Mach Zehnder (CMZ) coupler consisting of Mach-Zehnder (MZ) section of equal arms and Mach-Zehnder section of unequal arms (delay line) for dynamic equalization of EDFA gain spectrum. The simulation results for the beam propagation of the device are evaluated by using BPM software. The device length estimated in simulation is ～8mm which is ～ 10 times less than that of the existing CMZ coupler. Dynamic equalization of EDFA gain spectrum is obtained by using low power thermooptic phase shifter placed on the MZ arm.
