BONGA SAILAWAY TO NIGERIA'S FIRST DEEPWATER DEVELOPMENT

In Early October, The $700M Bonga FPSO was completed and prepared to sailaway from AMEC's Tyneside yard destined for Nigeria at the end of a 10 month project to install topsides facilities for processing oil, water and gas. Recognised as the largest floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel in the offshore industry, it will be located on the Bonga oilfield, 120km to the southwest of Warn in the Niger Delta. There, it will be moored in 1030m of water as the centre of Nigeria's first deepwater development. The field is due to start up at the end of March 2004, when it will produce oil and gas for at least the next 20 years. Shell said that total expenditure would hit $ 2.5bn (N 290 bn) by the time the field comes on stream, as part of the total $ 8.5 bn Shell earmarked for Nigeria's petroleum industry over a five-year period that began in 1999.
