The Chinese year of the Rooster is characterised by deliberation, great capability, difficult relationships and wildly fluctuating fortunes. Nowhere is this more typified than the Chinese oil and gas industry. The county urgently needs to discover ways of acquiring sufficient hydrocarbon resources to fuel its current meteoric industrial growth. Decades of antagonism with its Russian neighbour however, look likely to disqualify it from access to the huge Siberian resources to the North. For many years, the country has looked to coal and hydropower as its primary energy supplies, however severe local shortages coupled with a burgeoning demand from both domestic and particularly industrial sectors, have made the country look increasingly to other energy forms, notably oil and gas.
