On April 14, 1998, at the first meetingrnof the newly formed Southwest Chapterrnof the INMM, held at the DOE CentralrnTraining Academy (now the DOE NationalrnTraining Center) in Albuquerque,rnNew Mexico, USA, then-President ofrnthe INMM Obie Amacker “threw downrnthe gauntlet” to the attendees, challengingrnthe new chapter to help the Instituternengage the “next generation of nuclearrnstewards.” At the time, the Institute’srnExecutive Committee had been expressingrngrowing concern with the aging ofrnthe membership and the lack of participationrnby the younger generation. Theyrnhoped to identify strategies to betterrnengage students, universities and thosernentering the disciplines of nuclear materialsrnmanagement in the activities of thernInstitute.
