How New England Water Utilities Can Save Energy

Public water supply requires energy, which is often a water utility's largest operational cost. While energy-for-water intensities are less in New England than elsewhere in the United States, many opportunities still exist for improvement. Research and case studies indicate that energy savings of 10 percent to 50 percent are possible through cost-effective, non-capital actions. Energy management helps water utilities reduce costs, improve service and operate more sustainably. A few examples and best practices are discussed here.
