The last international conference of the Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Consortium (TINA'97) was held in Santiago, Chile, during November 17-20, 1997. The TINA Consortium is a global alliance for the research and development of advanced communications, led by the principal telecom operators in the world in a joint collaboration with the major manufacturers of telecommunications and computer equipment. The consortium was established in 1993 as a five-year project to develop a universal software layer (middleware) which would allow the utilization of distributed computing over telecommunication network platforms on a planetary scale. As the TINA Consortium was then reaching the end of this first phase (1993-1997), last year's conference offered a unique opportunity to analyze and evaluate the results of this effort, and to debate the main challenges ahead in the second phase of the consortium (1998-2000).
