Fire in the Hole: Aluminum Dross in Landfills

Landfill fires caused by aluminum dross are a somewhat uncommon, but very serious problem. They will become an increasingly less uncommon problem if nothing is done to address the maintenance and disposal of aluminum dross. As landfills continue to age, aluminum dross fires will grow in number and severity. This Note has discussed the serious impact that landfill fires have on surrounding environments and communities. Merely continuing to put out the fires after they start is an inefficient solution because of the damage that occurs before, and after, the fires are extinguished.
