摘要

Let me begin by taking us back to the context in which the Journal of Military Ethics UME) came into being. When Baard Maeland, founding co-editor, first conceived the idea of what became JME, in the early discussions he had with others, and in the meeting between him and me in January 2001 that marks the concrete editorial beginnings of the Journal, thinking and writing about ethics and the use of armed force was hardly a new topic. Not only was there a historical tradition reaching back hundreds of years, but there had been a debate over nuclear weapons which ran for some three decades until the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the experience of the Vietnam War had produced its own lines of debate.
