One of the very few political beliefs that unifies Americans across the political spectrum is the idea that Americans owe their veterans an immense - indeed, unpayable - debt of gratitude. In Gratitude toward Veterans: Why Americans Should Not Be Very Grateful to Veterans, Stephen Kershnar argues that this belief is mistaken. Kershnar, a professor of philosophy at the State University of New York at Fredonia and an attorney, has earned respect and notoriety for defending positions that most people find repugnant, including the permissibility of interrogational torture and some forms of adult-child sex. No doubt, many will find the conclusions of this work unsettling as well.
