Artificial material is widely studied recently with the developed EM computing technology. This paper describes a free-space measurement setup using a flat artificial lens antenna. The flat lens antenna has a disk shape with 50 mm diameter and 2.29 mm thickness. It is set in front of a small patch antenna resonating at 16.8 GHz to get a narrow beam. The setup is used to measure microwave attenuation and phase shift through a sawdust sample, and the results are compared with that measured with patch antenna, and with that by a standard horn antenna. It is shown that the attenuation and phase shift, measured with lens antenna, fit well with those measured with the horn antennas. The standard deviations of the results measured with the lens antenna are much smaller than that measured with the patch antenna.
