摘要

Belizean historiography will never be the same again. In From Colony to Nation, Anne Macpherson draws on archival records and interviews she conducted with women activists who participated in political struggles in Belize across the twentieth century to challenge many standard assumptions of Belizean historiography. As the first scholar to apply a gendered analysis to Belizean history, Macpherson convincingly demonstrates how deeply gendered was the process of making a Belizean nation. Two key dimensions to this process are marked in the book's subtitle: first, that women played significant roles as activists within the two most influential political currents of twentieth-century Belize, colonial middle-class reform projects and popular labour-nationalism; and second, that gender constructs have been central to struggles over political power in Belize.
