Retracing the story of fare collection - from its beginnings through to electronic ticketing - would fill an entire book in its own right. Between 1886 and 1980 no fewer than 17 Congress reports addressed the topic. And since the inception of Mobi+ and the Association's electronic library in 2000, there have been over 600 recorded references. Modern-day inflation, you might say...rnGiven the impossibility of summarising the development of fare collection in a few lines, we thought it would be more fun to go through some old reports in order to discover some of the main points made.rnAccording to our archives, the first report to address the issue was actually presented at the 5th General Assembly (Amsterdam, 21 to 23 August 1890). The very detailed question concerned the description of the system for the collection of fares [...]; the inspection system, both on the line and at the manager's office; and the cost of each of these inspections in relation to revenue.
