Light Rail: the backbone of the Heilbronn system: A new tram-train network rejuvenates the city and region

The City of Heilbronn is in northern Baden-Wuerttemberg, some 70km east of Karlsruhe and 40km north of the federal state capital, Stuttgart (see above). Heilbronn forms the hub of the Heilbronn-Franken region. It has a population of around 120,000 inhabitants, but is one of the few cities in Germany with no direct link to the long-distance rail services of German Railways (Deutsche Bahn AG). The region itself however has a dense rait network. Deutsche Bahn AG operates these lines, while the line to Karlsruhe is part of the network operated by Albtalbahn Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (AVG).
