Driverless vehicles - part of the future of public transport

No traffic planner could possibly ignore it - a vision of the future that includes driverless people-movers. Whether underground or elevated above the street, the industry has pledged to solve the problems surrounding urban traffic. Due to the high cost of additional infrastructure, however, people-movers have never progressed beyond the prototype phase or been used for anything more than specialist applications. With the emergence of 'personal transit systems' and 'podcars', discussions are once again coming to the fore. But something seems to be changing: both the car industry and Google are heavily engaged in exploring the future of self-driving cars. Vehicles are being integrated and fitted with sensors and computers that make it possible for automated cars to be driven through the streets.
