The ways in which police both individually and collectively make decisions have a dominantninfluence on both the public and the wider criminal justice system. Its study help us betternunderstand, for example, how senior investigation officers’ decisions affect criminal investigations,nhow strategic command decisions aremade, how andwhen police discretion is exercised,nor how best to deal with ‘looters’ as seen in recent riots in England. To encourage the developmentnof this burgeoning multi-disciplinary area of study, we invite original papers for a specialnedition of this journal.
