It is well known to business managers that the emergence of new communication technologies in the workplace typically create business opportunities, but also business risks. The burgeoning use of smartphones is following this pattern, but the risks have not yet been as appreciated as are the obvious benefits of this new communication device. One of those risks, the risk of smartphone data loss or misuse, is very real, and businesses must take steps to protect smartphone data from unauthorized disclosure or loss; retrieve smartphone data for preservation; and consider whether, and to what extent, smartphone data should be monitored.
