Europe's Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) was a work in progress for nearly 50 years before the irrevocable fixing of exchange rates in 1999 and the arrival of Euro notes and coins in 2002. Most international economists studied Europe's 'Big Adventure' through a macroeconomic lens, asking whether any subset of European nations satisfied conditions for a unified currency area, what the impact of unification might be, and whether the gains from unification exceeded the likely costs and risks. Along the way, however, and especially after creating EMU, planners needed to devote equal attention to the micro-structural elements of unification, the institutions and regulations under which the EMU would actually operate. Weaving together the financial markets of 27 diverse European Union (EU) countries (of which 16 at present are in EMU) is a daunting and ongoing task. In European Financial Markets and Institutions (Cambridge University Press, 2009) by Jakob De Haan, Sander Oosterloo, and Dirk Schoenmaker, the authors set out to explore the breadth of financial markets and institutions that have evolved roughly ten years after eleven members of the European Union adopted the single currency in 1999.
