COMMISSIONING OF POWER TRANSFORMERS

It is important that a transformer which was designed, manufactured and tested at factory with due care is reassembled and commissioned at site with ample care and precaution to ensure smooth energisation without costly failures and mishaps. The site erection should be done by competent personnel within defined and controlled conditions following the instructions of the manufacturer. However it is necessary to ensure by pre-commissioning tests that all internal connections were properly done and the processing was done properly extracting any moisture ingressed during transport or storage or erection. Many of the tests specified in standards as Factory Acceptance Tests cannot be done at site due to facility limitations. Hence a careful selection of tests depending on the complexity of the unit shall be made from the suppliers Instructions, international guide lines like IEEE stdC57.93-2007, Indian Standards IS 10028 Part 1 to 3, CBIP Publication No. 295 Manual on Transformers Section K etc.
