摘要

For nearly 80 years, the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) has stood at the apex of Britain's intelligence and security machinery, drawing on the work of the growing intelligence apparatus to provide policymakers with detailed intelligence assessments. Despite its importance, the day-to-day workings of the committee and its implications for policymakers, with the clear exception of Sir Percy Cradock's ground-breaking study Know Your Enemy, was less well known and little understood compared to other organisations. This first volume of a two-part history of the committee, charting its first 20 years, from its formation in 1936 to the Suez debacle in 1956, fills an important gap in the literature, providing a highly readable account of the committee's impact on Britain's foreign and defence policy during the period.
