New smart-card technology offers greater memory capacity and on-board processing within a secure, tamper-resistant and portable environment. This article introduces smart cards and examines the current state of the technology. Examples of applications which exploit high-capacity devices are given, such as medical records, corporate cards and electronic wallets. The article concludes with a discussion on the future of smart-card technology.
