Operators around the world have started to transform their network infrastructure to incorporate the next generation packet based technologies. The transmission technology is primarily VDSL/ADSL2+ for copper and optical Ethernet for fibre. Besides the native packet oriented services such as IP-TV and VPN services, these networks must also be able to support emulated legacy services. Supporting all of these services imposes a wide range of bandwidth and QoS requirements, which demands a strong resource control to optimise resource usage.The network must support QoS mechanisms. Bandwidth is never an unlimited resource, certainly not in the access network: resource control is an essential complement to the QoS mechanisms available today in NGN networks.
