While electrical telegraphic and telephonic communications over wires were growing in the 19th century (as described by John Liffen in a related article -[1]) the seeds of another technology were germinating - transmission of information without wires by means of electromagnetic (EM) waves. In 1864, )ames Clerk Maxwell's seminal mathemematical paper, The Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field [2], established a mathematical basis predicting EM wave propagation. It would be some years, however, before confirmation of his theories.
