A visionary and tenacious man, Tommy Flowers made a major contribution to World War 2 code-breaking with the design and building of the world's first computer Colossus. But his work was unrecognised until the 1970s, due to the restrictions of the UK Official Secrets Act, explains Professor Keith Ward. The son of a bricklayer, Thomas Harold Flowers was born on 22 December, 1905 in the Poplar area of London's East End.He married Eileen Green in 1935 and the couple had two sons.
