The power of mobile communications to do good was recognised earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, when the RUDI Sandesha Vyavhar project (a collaboration between Vodafone Foundation, Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women) won The Best Mobile Product, Initiative or Service in Emerging Markets Award. Here's why. For many of us considerations about mobile communication surround whether we can get decent reception (if not why not?), the availability of Wi-Fi (free of course) and the ability to take a decent selfie (everyone's a photo-journalist these days, right?). But how often do we pause to consider the literally life-changing role they can play in - for example - remote, rural India?
