The Internet of Things (IoT) will enable the connection of huge numbers of smart devices to the Internet to gather data from the physical world and communicate the results to distributed applications within the cloud that will act upon the data gained. Frequently, 5G is mentioned as the network that will "unleash the true potential of IoT" but this is far from the whole story and it is important to also understand the impact alternative connectivity solutions will have on 5G's dominance.
