摘要

The 2004 Silicones and Silicone Modified Materials Symposium consisted of 66 oral and 26 poster presentations. This ACS Symposium Series 964 highlights selected talks from the Third Silicones and Silicone Modified Materials Symposium that was held in March 2004 at the ACS National Meeting in Anaheim, California. Previous Silicones and Silicone Modified Materials symposia have also been documented in ACS Symposium Series 729, and ACS Symposium Series 838. The book starts with an introduction entitled "Say Yes to Silicones! [Si to Si!]", which was written by Michael J. Owen, a prominent industrial silicone chemists. He briefly reviews the history of silicone chemistry and describes the unique chemical and physical properties of poly-dimethylsiloxanes (PDMS), thus making the case that silicones are the most important class of semi-inorganic polymers. He believes that silicone polymers and silicone-based materials have a bright future in the 21st century due to their remarkable ability to form a wide range of polymer architectures and the anticipated strong growth in the area of silicone copolymers with organic polymers. He also points out that the field of silicon inorganic materials is still in its infancy and that research in this area will lead to development of many novel silicon based materials.
