摘要

The multi-disciplinary field of supramolecular chemistry encompasses the broad area of molecular recognition and, thus, finds many of its roots in the field of organic chemistry. Although the role of metal ions in the origin of supramolecular chemistry is clear (i.e. crown ether, spherand, and cryptand metal-ion complexes), it is largely within the last decade or so that many of the fundamental concepts associated with inorganic chemistry have experienced application to supramolecular systems. The development of materials chemistry, particularly as it relates to macromolecules, has provided a rich vehicle for concept development and has now given way to a new area commonly referred to hybrid inorganic-organic (or organic-inorganic) supramolecular chemistry. Supramolecular and Self-Assembled Metal-Containing Materials is volume 9 in the Macromolecules Containing Metal and Metal-like Elements series that does a timely and rigorous job outlining how far the area has come.
