Sago the edible starch in the form of globules is manufactured from tapioca tubers (Manihotesculenta). Sago and starch making from cassava is one of the major food industries in South-East Asia. During the process these units release about 45,000-50,000 litre of sago effluent and takes about 10 days for water to be let out of the factory as effluent. The release of high content of organic load along with the effluent when stored results in obnoxious odours, irritating colour, lower pH and higher BOD and COD. When the effluent is released into the environment without proper treatment, it alters the characteristics of ecosystem.Effluents arising from sago processing factories are very acidic and it is neutralized with cow dung ash (20 g/1000 ml) stabilized the pH from 4.0 to the required pH 7.0. The overall removal efficiencies of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) by this anaerobic fluidized bed reactor were observed to be high. The AFBR perform better than the other types of reactors. Full - scale implementation-of treatment of sago industry effluent using AFBR after neutralization with cow dung ash, will achieve the effluent quality standards set by the pollution control board.
