摘要

Industrialization and other human activities have polluted the natural resources to a great extent. Rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, reservoirs etc are the direct targets for waste discharge at many places. Flowing water carries the pollutants and debris from one point to another. However, it is the stagnant water bodies like lake, ponds and reservoir which are of more concern as they allow the pollutants to seep into the ground and pollute the ground water. This paper focuses on the sources of lake water contamination and its environmental impacts. The treatment of already polluted water bodies is equally important. Phytoremediation has emerged as a new, eco-friendly, cost effective technology for treatment of water. This paper also covers the review of Phytoremediation technology applied to few experiments. More than 600 species are already tested and proven to be effective in removal of contaminants including heavy metals. Reviews of few of such species are included in this paper.
