Besides active control methodology of leak detection and control, leakage losses can be reduced by passive methodology like pressure management. Water demand varies over the entire day and usually less in night hours. Higher residual pressures are thus observed in water distribution networks in the night time. As the water loss through small leaks/cracks increases with the increase in pressure, the reduction in pressure in the night time can be achieved through valve adjustments. A pilot zone in Nagpur has been changed from intermittent to continuous mode of supply with replacement of all service lines and old problematic pipelines. The unaccounted for water is reduced from 50% to 33% on conversion of mode. A study is carried out to further reduce leakage losses in distribution network by reducing the excessive pressure in night hours without any inconvenience to consumers. It is observed that in the study area total water supply reduced by about 12% of average daily supply with pressure control, and comparing with water supplied in night time the supply after control is reduced by about 36%.
