Reservoir operation is very complex phenomenon which depends upon many parameters such as storage level of reservoir, releases for irrigation, water supply, hydropower, downstream water demands in Industries, evaporation and leakages from the reservoir. All these parameters combined together to form the operating model for a reservoir. Reservoir operation study is an important field of water resources management as this has a direct bearing on the economy of a region. Hence, it is very important to operate the reservoirs efficiently not only during normal operating conditions but also during extreme situations like droughts. A reservoir requires certain operating policy or operating rules in order to achieve the objectives. The present study is concerned with the development of monthly release policies, using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (PSOA). The proposed approach is applied to RaviShankar Sagar Reservoir of the Mahanadi Reservoir complex situated in the Raipur district of Chhattisgarh State. The desired data for formulating the model was collected from various agencies. The operating policies were derived using PSO with the help of MATLAB software. The results obtained are much better than the one obtained by convention Reservoir operation technique.
