REVISED STRINGENT SEWAGE DISPOSAL STANDARDS-A RECYCLE/REUSE OPPORTUNITY

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has set aside the relaxed standards for discharge of treated sewage and introduced the stringent standards based on the Expert Committees 'recommendations. The new discharge standards are very stringent and ensures that the treated sewage quality is acceptable to reuse /recycle for all non-potable purposes. Thus, NGT is viewing Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) as an asset / alternate source of water for non-potable purposes. There are opportunities and challenges in the implementation of this order, however, this is likely to bring about a paradigm shift in the sewage treatment & water reuse / recycle scenario.
