摘要

To have access to clean water is a fundamental necessity. Disinfection has always played an important role in water treatment operation. The cost and labour involved in disinfection operations are quite high. It is necessary to look for supplementary material which will prove to be an aid for disinfection operation. Many herbal plants are found to possess anti-bacterial activity. The activity of selected medicinal plants like Azardirchtaindica, Ficus religiosa, Tridaxprocumbensand Moringa Oleifera was studied against bacterial strain Escherichia coli. The plants were chosen based on the literature. With the solvents like ethyl acetate, hexane, chloroform and methanol extraction was carried out. The paper disc diffusion method was used for the analysis of the activity of herbal extract against E Coli. The effect of the extract on E. Coli was studied. The extract obtained from chloroform showed higher inhibition zone diameter as compared to other solvents. The study revealed that these extracts can cause inhibition against the growth of bacteria. The study demonstrates the use of natural eco-friendly agent i.e. herbal extracts for inhibiting the growth of E. coli. The research was done to propose an idea of the use of naturally available medicinal plants for the disinfection of water.
