In reviewing the status of this Journal for the past year, as required in my annual report to the Board of Directors of IS&T, I note that we are in a stable situation with respect to numbers of papers both submitted and published. Our acceptance rate remains more-or-less constant at about 80%. However, one statistic in particular attracts my attention. In 2007 approximately 45% of the papers submitted to the Journal were based on presentations at IS&T conferences during the preceding year, down from a historical level of nearly 60%. In one respect this result is healthy. It indicates a significant growth in number of submissions to the Journal (both general papers and invited papers) unrelated to our conferences, reflecting the dynamic character of imaging science and the imaging industry. I hope our authors continue this trend, and that my colleagues involved in conference preparation and organization look closely at the topics addressed in these articles as the basis for expanding the scope of our conference and tutorial offerings.
