Stereoscopic content features, such as motion in depth, are a major factor in causing visual discomfort while viewing stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) video. Previous studies have shown that eye movement is related to visual discomfort. In this article, the authors analyze the relationship between visual discomfort and eye movement while viewing stereoscopic 3D content. They developed a measurement system for quantitative analysis of eye movements and examined changes in a variety of oculomotor variables as a function of visual discomfort caused by motion in depth when watching stereoscopic 3D content. The experimental results show that eye movement is an efficient measure of visual discomfort of the viewer when watching stereoscopic 3D content. In addition, the authors constructed a visual discomfort estimation model and demonstrated the real-time visual discomfort monitoring system as an application of this model.
